Academics/Researchers
Invention is the core activity of Research
professionals, and the immediate outcome is intellectual property
(IP) that is typically owned by their sponsoring Institution and
/ or Employer. The Commercialisation process works by taking
IP that is essentially secret, protecting it in various ways, and
finding business and financial partners who recognise the opportunity
to build business activity around that IP. As the Inventor, you
stand to benefit (in any of several ways) including from any business
income that is generated involving your work.
When you have invented something, play your cards
carefully. Get in touch immediately with your Institution's 'Commercialisation'
(or 'Technology transfer') Office. They will set you on the path
to ensure that the IP you have created is managed to the benefit
of yourself and your Institution. Typically, outcomes of the process
are the formation of licence deals, and the creation of spin out
companies.
In our experience, academics become quite
adept over a reasonable period, at juggling the academic pressures
of teaching, research and commercialisation. However, academics
are not usually experienced in the day-to-day management of the
specific steps in the commercialisation process.
These include:
- obtaining an immediate expert evaluation
of the commercial potential of their IP.
- managing the dynamic process that starts
with IP protection (with short term secrecy) and ends with IP
protection and publication.
- developing a practical commercialisation
PLAN.
- identifying the milestones of that plan,
including seed-corn funding, for eg: to develop academic propositions
for commercial demonstration.
- securing profitable outcomes via the
creation and successful execution of licences and spin-outs.
Science Ventures can help to advance your
project (see our 5-star process). We have worked with hundreds of
academics and have launched substantial licence deals and spin out
companies (see our track record link on the home page.). We work
with academics who wish to take a very active part in the process,
and with others who wish us to lead it for them.
We are thorough, enterprising, straight-talking and maintain high
standards of integrity. If you feel that we might work well together
in Commercialising your particular technology, then we suggest that
you speak with your Commercialisation Office and please do get in
touch with us.
